Didn't you do some nice tricks in your sims using these?

Yeah, as in most people, corporations et al. I replaced 1000 prim skyscrapers with 2 prims. I pay 1000 bucks a month for my own servers, leave me the fuck alone.

Yeah and Starax's new stuff? MegaSCULPTIES.

The timing of them even having this discussion is amazingly awful, considering how much came out of the VW conference.

Thankfully it seems most comments are positive and pro-megaprims.

    • What about creating new Megaprims? They should allow that too on your own land, right?

@omaregan Depends - do you have your own sim or are you creating 65535m^2 megaprims on your 512m newbie land?

Megaprims were a hack that was patched. The client (havok 1) apparently can't handle anything bigger than 10m. After the megaprims showed up, LL allowed them to remain with social restrictions (private estates). The fact that they allofasudden are asking for feedback cuz of 'problems', really shows a nasty kind of ineptitude. Last week, I think, they patched something that was perceived to be a 'bug', but in reality, it had existed for so long that the 'bug' became a defacto standard that people designed around. Same with Megaprims.

Havok 4 can't handle this? It's just getting harder and harder to believe. And damn, I'm starting to sound like all of those crazy, knee-jerk panic mongers that run amok in the blog comments. But sheesh.

Start it all over, god. The apologists are coming out of the woodwork about 'wellll this is how it was made and blah blah blah.'

As an aside, look at the excitement around the Electric Sheep's viewer. Cuz it has an actual interface.

Hire a game designer or something, PLEASE.

And yay, they somehow managed to get around the Wordpress 'bug' of comments shutting off at 100--- that post magically shut off at '150'.

That's kind of what the blog post is trying to get in the comments. What sort of restrictions should be in place for these things? Size? If I am in a mainland sim and drop a 1000 meter wide megaprim in the sandbox, it's griefing. If I do it on my own sim, it's a nice way to make the ocean look better. I just don't like Michael's comment about "If we ban them from the mainland, we'll also have to remove them from all private estates". There are just so many projects like Eric's and other large build that use them smartly as prim-saving devices that would suffer because some people are abusing them.
For a second, I was thinking about something like "if they fit on your land, go for it", but I have seen so many normal 10m prims hanging way over into someone else's property, especially linked ones that stick out even more. If they can't currently do anything about detecting these as infringing on other land, it doesn't look good for being able to restrict the megaprims in this way. Sure, it is technically possible, but it doesn't seem like that tech is currently in place, and it's much easier to send the megaprims the way of virtual gambling.

So, the opinions that matter will be the first 150 blog trolls. Awesome.

BTW, I'm not irritated that they are asking for feedback-- that's kinda amazing. It's more the fact that they have to ask. Why does everything that comes out of there sound like a nonstop big 'oops' all the time?

It is a technical vs. social debate though if you look at it closely.
