Coming up, a nice coherent summary of my morning Twitter rampage.

Our first topic is on the issue of virtual worlds, namely, that there are what? 30? If Second Life is the first thing out of your mouth, you are behind. (Maybe not totally, but hey, it could be your city.) With the awareness of these other worlds supporting importing of objects from Google's 3D warehouse (for free), does this impact economies? My dollar is saved now. SL, regardless of one of my projects there being used in CSI: NY, is getting more in my way at a technical level. Very frustrating.

In the ego chamber news, it's all about facebook and how many people link to you in Google Reader. For the dick-ish white males out there, is validation and popularity really that important? Maybe it is, after all, group blogs and the power-starved top the list. It's okay not to care, but damn, we're only the tech ghetto. Sheesh.

Third topic was about the Muppet Show. Well not a topic, I just wanted to put that in your head. I had to get Chocolate Rain out of my head somehow.

In the XBOX 360 news of the day, I've finished the first draft of a map called 'Fort Stygian', which extends the narrative from Neobokrug's "Wastelands" in SL over to that world in the living room. You can push pictures and audio (like podsafe music and podcasts) to the XBOX in a very sneaker-netty kinda way, but still. It's on my list of things to do.

There's nothing really to say about Twitter vs. Jaiku that smart people can't figure out for themselves.

Also, as I Utter'd this morning, I'll be in Tokyo for two weeks during SXSW. First time to miss it, but hey, it's my birthday trip-- Tokyo Disney Parks look amazing, and I'm planning the itinerary now.

One final thing about having a zillion friends on a social site. Ever think that there are coat-tail riders? Or are they just audience? And for the people in the network that don't feel noticed, should we just slap a bar code on their heads?

New media? Naw, new mass media.

Feel free to comment on any topic. :)

Content for the XBOX 360, in what context? Is this a Halo thing?

Also, for all the posts that even have Facebook and $100 billion in the same sentence, maybe we should spam their comments with how Alzheimer's is a $100 billion disease. My GOOGLE READER (there I had to be all techie) http://www.technologyreview.com/Biotech/19575/ had that link.

Facebook... $100 billion.. are they smoking crack???

2 years, 1 month ago by ianbetteridge

  • jasonw22

The folks at the Graphing Social conf (or whatever it was called) were definitely smoking something. Calacanis of all people actually did a decent job of debunking the $100B nonsense in his blog.

@jasonw22 you can mod some content and plug in some content-- not in anyway an official level, but hacked up enough that you can hope to force the issue of 'please mr. gates, tear down these walls'... user-gen stuffs can't exist there. Gaming. Walled Garden. Pay us 70 bucks and leave, consumer.

I'm bummed that 64MB integrated graphics isn't enough juice to play along in ActiveWorlds and Multiverse. Don't think I'll be buying a new computer just for Saijo. At least, not quite yet.

Jason - new graphics card? Or are you one of those locked up Mac people (like me)? :)

2 years, 1 month ago by ianbetteridge

  • jasonw22

Ya, Mac Mini and Macbook. Both have Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics cards. I used to do PCs, but I got tired of flimsy hardware. Maybe a Mac Pro is somewhere in my distant future (but I wish they had a smaller case)

That's one of the reasons I went for a MacBook Pro - that Macbook graphics hardware was ok a year ago, but now looks really crappy even for a cheap laptop. Classic Apple strategy - use hardware which is just about OK at launch, then don't upgrade for ages.

The Macbook Pro has other issues (I wanted my laptop to be lightweight, for one thing). Macs just aren't quite "there" yet for gaming-like uses.

@jasonw22 in the future, we'll all have consoles xD and seriously, Active Worlds Saijo is just a sandbox... I'd rather just build on something rock solid. The virtual world space will be hammered on by the gaming space, with world options.

Amusingly, I'm too lazy to fiddle with my router, so I have to run Active Worlds server over my laptop on EVDO than over DSL/Cable on a desktop. Which is funny to me.

Of course, the biggest issue with the MBP is its ability to get so hot it fries your testicles into sterility if you have it on your lap for too long. But that's probably too much information! :)

Apart from the hideous-looking Home, is anyone planning a virtual world for the PS3?

2 years, 1 month ago by ianbetteridge

  • ericrice

I have two kids already, so if I get fried, that's easier than getting snipped... I'll pretend it's a giant friggin' cigarette.

Just grit your teeth and think of processor cycles. You'll never feel a thing.

@ericrice I would be thrilled to be able to produce "virtual world" content for a rock-solid console (without resorting to hacks or unreasonable licensing fees). That would be a lot of fun (and could be quite useful beyond gaming and socializing as well).

I always thought it'd be useful to do something like ponoko.com inside a virtual world.

Oh, I don't have 20 min to waste reading all of this, how much did I just miss out in twitter? Oh well. Now I get to ponder all of this for the next two hours that I am away from the computer. :)

Laptop sterility is a myth, Testies are not in the tops of your thighs.

2 years, 1 month ago by ChristianBurns

  • ianbetteridge

Christian: You don't use your laptop with your legs spread? Is that just me then? :)

2 years, 1 month ago by ianbetteridge

  • ChristianBurns

ok, if you spread your legs the body is designed to allow them to drop far enough away that they don't come into contact with the laptop. Unless you are upside down.

2 years, 1 month ago by ChristianBurns

  • ianbetteridge

You mean you don't use your laptop upside down..? :)

Check this out http://www.japanesepod101.com/subscription.php they have three levels of subscription.. Free, basic and premium... nice to see someone 'get' it with regards to making money. They'd make a KILLING if itunes would let them.

You can make money on your podcast in iTunes but you'd have to make an album on CD baby

re: Coat-tail riders - I'm probably one of them in most cases - unless I have something of value to say, I say nothing - but often enjoy/benefit from reading what other people have to say.

What can I say...you had me at teabaggr...xD. Here we prefer loose tea and especially high mountain oolong...but I digress.

JapanesePod101? I've known about http://www.chinesepod.com for some time. I wonder if they're affiliated?

On coat-tail riders...am I reading this correctly, a media personality lamenting pilot fish? Shocka! ;-) In a landscape where everyone is trying to establish themselves as an "expert"...if you're starting to feel your shoulders get heavy it's probably because someone is trying to stand on them to shout louder and farther. I never knew so many people secretly wanted to be marketing gurus or social theorists.

For me these spaces are a giant series of cocktail parties...great for meeting folks from divergent walks of life, sharing some of life and passions with them, and, ya know...eventually making fabulous bank selling my Facebook friends list to Check Point.
